Local know-how

  • Don't consume alcohol publicly — Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol requires permit from Gujarat Tourism offices
  • Local SIM: Very good 4G. Jio and Airtel reliable. Good coverage in Laxmi Vilas Palace area and city centre.
  • Auto-rickshaws near Vadodara railway station quoting inflated tourist fares instead of using meters
  • Peak season in December: keep bags zipped and don't flash jewellery
