Safety
8Yala safari is safe inside a licensed jeep. The golden rule: never exit the vehicle. Leopard encounters are close — the animals are habituated to jeeps. Elephant charges are rare but possible if jeeps crowd animals.
Women travellers
Safe within licensed safari jeeps and lodges. Follow all operator guidelines.
Culture & etiquette
- + Stay in the jeep at all times — this is a safety rule not an option
- + Remain quiet during leopard sightings — sudden noise disturbs the animal
- + Choose operators certified by the Wildlife Conservation Department
- - Don't approach or crowd animals — responsible operators maintain distance
- - Don't visit in November when park access is severely limited by rainfall
- - Don't choose the cheapest operator — park fees are fixed, so cheap means cutting corners on guiding quality
Food to try
Tissamaharama village curry lunch
The gateway town to Yala — Tissamaharama has excellent local rice and curry restaurants serving post-safari lunch; fresh coconut milk curries, jackfruit, dhal and curried fish from the nearby lagoon; a proper Sri Lankan lunch for under $5
Sri Lankan camp breakfast
Yala's safari lodges serve pre-dawn breakfasts for 5:30am gates — typically egg hoppers, fruit, roti and tea; eating in the dark of the lodge before a sunrise safari is one of Sri Lanka's great travel experiences
