Safety
safeZermatt is car-free and very safe as a village. The serious risks are all mountain-related: the Matterhorn is one of the most demanding climbs in the Alps (over 500 people have died on it) — only with an experienced mountain guide. Year-round glacial hiking in the Monte Rosa Plateau requires crampons and a guide. Summer hiking on the marked trails (Gornergrat, Rothorn) is accessible but cloud can descend rapidly — carry waterproofs. Altitude sickness possible above 3,000m. Emergency: 117, 144, 1414 (REGA air rescue).
Women travellers
Zermatt is very safe for solo women. The car-free village is small, walkable, and has a strong sense of community. The ski slopes and hiking trails are well-monitored. Evening Bahnhofstrasse restaurants and bars are relaxed and safe.
