moderateWashington DC's tourist core (National Mall, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Dupont Circle) is very safe. Crime is concentrated in SE Washington (east of the Anacostia River) and parts of NE — no tourist reason to visit. The Metro is safe during the day; late-night use between 11pm–midnight can attract rough passengers at outer stations. Anacostia and Congress Heights — avoid entirely.
