Vøringsfossen travel guide

Vøringsfossen is Norway's most famous waterfall — a 182m plunge from the Hardangervidda plateau into the Måbødalen gorge. The new Hardanger bridge and viewing platforms (opened 2021) have transformed access, offering a vertigo-inducing close-up view of the full drop from suspended platforms above the falls.

Vøringsfossen is well-managed for safety. The main hazard is wet, slippery paths from spray — wear proper footwear. The old Måbø mountain road requires care.

Culture & etiquette

Waterproof hiking boots and jacket regardless of forecast — spray from the fall wets nearby paths.
  • + Visit early morning or late evening in peak summer to avoid bus tour crowds
  • + Walk the old Måbø road on the north side of the valley — it is one of Norway's most historic paths and completely changes the scale perspective from the viewpoint
  • + Return for the Midnight Sun season — watching a waterfall at 11pm in full daylight is quintessentially Norwegian
  • - Don't stand at unbarriered cliff edges — the valley drops 280m
  • - Don't skip the Fossatun building even if sceptical of visitor centres — the cantilever viewing deck is architecturally dramatic
  • - Don't underestimate the old Måbødalen road's steepness — inappropriate footwear is dangerous on wet stone

The Fossatun visitor centre café serves Norwegian heart-shaped waffles with brunost, jam and cream with coffee; deliberately simple, but after a canyon walk with wet boots and waterfall spray in your face, Norwegian waffles taste extraordinary

Hardanger apple juice directly from farm

Farm shops along the Rv7 between Vøringsfossen and Eidfjord sell direct-press Norman apple juice and cider; the Hardanger orchard belt is Norway's finest; far better than anything available in Oslo supermarkets
