Verona travel guide

Verona is the city of Romeo and Juliet — but there's far more than just the famous balcony. This elegant northern Italian city boasts one of the best-preserved Roman arenas still hosting concerts, a stunning historic center, excellent wine from nearby Valpolicella, and a refined atmosphere that rivals Florence without the crowds. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Safety

Very Safe

Verona is very safe for tourists. The historic centre (Piazza Bra, Castelvecchio, Arena) is well-policed. Main risk is pickpockets near Juliet's House (Casa di Giulietta) during peak summer queues — keep bags zipped. Porta Nuova train station area has some late-night rough sleepers but is generally safe. Emergency: 118 (medical), 113 (police).

Women travellers

Generally safe. Some catcalling may occur but rarely dangerous. Travel in groups at night. Watch for pickpockets.

Culture & etiquette

Smart casual is appropriate for most settings. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites — cover shoulders and knees.
  • + Attend an opera at the Arena if possible
  • + Explore beyond Juliet's House
  • + Try Amarone wine from Valpolicella
  • + Day trip to Lake Garda
  • - Don't spend all your time at the balcony
  • - Don't touch gum-covered walls at Juliet's House
  • - Don't skip the Roman Arena
  • - Don't miss Piazza delle Erbe in evening
