Thessaloniki travel guide

Thessaloniki is Greece's second-largest city and its cultural capital — a Byzantine beauty with Ottoman layers, Roman ruins, and an incredible food scene (arguably better than Athens). The relaxed waterfront, vibrant nightlife, excellent museums (Museum of Byzantine Culture), and proximity to Chalkidiki beaches make it a perfect alternative to Athens.

Safety

Very Safe

Thessaloniki is safe and welcoming — Greece's second city has a vibrant café, bar, and food culture. The White Tower waterfront, Ano Poli (Upper Town), and Ladadika nightlife district are all safe. Petty theft in the Kapani and Modiano markets during peak hours. Avoid Lagkadikia and outer agricultural ring-road areas. The city has far fewer tourists than Athens — locals are friendly and helpful. Emergency: 100 (police), 166 (ambulance), 199 (fire).

Women travellers

Exercise standard precautions. Research specific areas before visiting. Use registered transport services. Avoid isolated areas at night.
