Safety

moderate

St. Petersburg is generally safe for tourists. Pickpockets operate on Nevsky Prospekt, at Hermitage queues, and on metro lines 1 and 2. Avoid drunken groups at night around Ligovsky Prospekt. During White Nights (June), streets stay busy all night which is mostly safe but petty theft increases.

Women travellers

Fairly safe for solo women. The central areas (Nevsky, Petrogradskaya) are well-lit and busy. Avoid late-night walks alone near Sennaya Ploshchad and Moskovskiy train stations. Taxis are generally safe — use Yandex.Taxi app rather than hailing on the street.

Culture & etiquette

Smart for theater/ballet.
  • + Book Hermitage tickets
  • + Join white nights celebrations
  • + Appreciate Russian art
  • - Do not photograph military personnel, security facilities, or restricted signs
  • - Do not disrespect Soviet WWII memorials or refer to the Siege of Leningrad dismissively — deeply emotional for locals
  • - Avoid public political commentary — safety risk
  • - Do not assume English is widely spoken outside tourist areas
