Shobak travel guide

Shobak Castle is a remote Crusader fortress in the highlands south of Karak, built by Baldwin I of Jerusalem in 1115. Less visited than Petra (40km south) or Karak, it rewards adventurous travellers with atmospheric ruins, carved Arabic inscriptions, and magnificent views over the desert highlands.

Shobak is isolated and facilities are almost non-existent. Come fully equipped with water, food and a torch. The site guard may offer informal guiding. Best visited as part of the King's Highway driving circuit.
