Safety
9RAK is safe and relaxed. Desert and mountain activities carry natural risks — go prepared and inform someone of your plans. Alcohol is available in licensed hotel restaurants unlike Sharjah.
Women travellers
Very safe. RAK is conservative but resort areas are relaxed.
Culture & etiquette
- + Respect modest dress codes in the old town and Dhayah Fort area
- + Try desert camping with a reputable operator — the RAK desert is stunning
- + Book Jebel Jais at dawn for the best views and coolest zipline temperatures
- - Don't hike mountains in summer midday — heat stroke risk
- - Don't wild camp in sensitive areas without permission
- - Don't assume RAK is like Dubai — it's significantly less developed but that's its appeal
Food to try
Fresh seafood at Al Sinniyah Island restaurants
RAK's coastline provides exceptional fresh seafood — hammour (grouper), shaari (emperor fish) and jumbo prawns grilled whole at waterfront restaurants; the Gulf fishing tradition is strongest in RAK where artisanal fishing dhows still sail
Harees (wheat and meat porridge)
The UAE's most ancient food — whole wheat kernels slow-cooked with lamb for 8+ hours until they form a smooth, pudding-like consistency; seasoned simply with ghee and cinnamon; eaten during Ramadan and celebrations; the RAK version is particularly well-regarded for its lamb quality
Dates from RAK farms
RAK's date palms produce some of the UAE's finest medjool and khlas varieties; sold at farm shops along the road to Khatt springs; eating dates with Arabic coffee (qahwa) is the foundational hospitality gesture in Emirati culture
