Punta del Este is South America's most glamorous beach resort — the 'Ibiza of the Southern Hemisphere' — where celebrities, jet-setters, and Argentinian vacationers descend each summer to see and be seen along Playa Brava and Playa Mansa. Out of season it's a peaceful, beautiful coastal town with excellent seafood, modern art (Casapueblo by Carlos Páez Vilaró), and dramatic Atlantic surfing. The contrast between high season crowds and off-season calm is stark.

Punta del Este is a glamorous resort and generally safe. Petty theft on beaches is the main concern during peak season (Jan–Feb). Keep valuables in the hotel safe during beach time.

Women travellers

Very safe in tourist areas. Take standard precautions at night in less-populated beach areas. Summer crowding can lead to petty theft.

Culture & etiquette

Beach casual during the day. Smart casual in the evenings for restaurants. More formal for Casino Atlantic or private club events. Fashion is taken seriously in January — locals dress up for evening promenades.

Asado

Uruguayan barbecue — ribs, sausages and offal grilled over wood embers. Uruguay has one of the highest beef consumption rates per capita in the world.

Chivito

Uruguay's national sandwich — a loaded roll with steak, ham, mozzarella, bacon, egg, olives and potato crisps. Enormous, indulgent and unmissable.

Medio y medio

Half white wine and half sparkling wine — the Montevideo tradition at El Ciudadano bar. Light, refreshing and perfect on a summer evening.
