Palermo is safe for tourists in the main sightseeing areas. The historic markets (Ballarò, Vucciria, Capo) are vibrant and safe by day — Vucciria at night is a lively outdoor party street. Keep bags close in the markets. Ortigia district (Syracuse) and Mondello beach area are both safe. Avoid the outer industrial areas of the city. Emergency: 118 (medical), 113 (police).
