Safety

very safe

Oxford city centre is very safe. The University areas, Covered Market, and Cornmarket are busy and well-policed. Cycling is everywhere — watch for cyclists when walking, especially on High Street and St Aldates. Avoid Blackbird Leys and Rose Hill (residential estates, no tourist reason to visit). Some parts of Cowley Road late Friday and Saturday nights have drunk revellers — stay aware. Phone theft exists around the bus station area and Carfax Tower. Emergency: 999.

Women travellers

Oxford is a very safe university city for solo women. The University areas, Jericho, and Cowley Road are busy and well-lit. Avoid isolated towpaths along the Cherwell at night. The active LGBTQ+ community means the city is welcoming and inclusive.
