Safety
safeOaxaca City is one of Mexico's safer tourist cities. The Centro Histórico, Monte Albán, and Mercado Benito Juárez areas are safe for tourists. Political marches and teacher union blockades (CNTE) periodically close the Zócalo — these are peaceful but can be disruptive. Do not photograph protests or military checkpoints.
Women travellers
Oaxaca City is generally safe for solo women — it has a strong arts and tourism community. Exercise normal precautions at night in the Jalatlaco and Xochimilco neighbourhoods. The surrounding Valles Centrales region is safe for day trips. Avoid hiking to mountain villages alone after dark.
