Meteora travel guide

Meteora is one of the world's most extraordinary places - a UNESCO World Heritage Site where ancient Eastern Orthodox monasteries perch impossibly atop towering sandstone pillars. Rising 400 meters above the Thessalian Plain, these "suspended rocks" and their historic monasteries create a landscape that defies belief and inspires wonder.

Safety

very safe

The Meteora monasteries (perched on towering rock pillars) are one of Greece's most extraordinary sites. Crime is minimal here — it is a UNESCO World Heritage devout monastery complex. Main hazards: the paths between the monasteries have sheer drops and no barriers in places — keep to marked paths. Summer heat (38°C+) requires carrying water on all walks. Monasteries close midday and have strict dress codes (shoulders and knees covered). Emergency: 100, 112.

Women travellers

Very safe. Religious site with respectful atmosphere.

Culture & etiquette

Modest dress required at all monasteries. Wraps available at entrance. Long pants for men, long skirts for women, shoulders covered.
  • + Dress modestly (long pants/skirts, covered shoulders - required)
  • + Respect monastery silence
  • + Remove hats inside
  • + Follow photography rules (no flash)
  • - Don't wear shorts/short skirts to monasteries
