Melk travel guide

Melk is a small Danube town dominated by one of Europe's great baroque monasteries — Stift Melk — perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the river. The abbey's library of 100,000 books and gold-gilded church interior are extraordinary. Melk is the gateway to the Wachau Valley UNESCO wine region, making it ideal combined with a Danube river cruise and visits to Krems and Dürnstein.

Safety

safe

Melk is a very small, extremely safe tourism town. The only risks are logistical — the Abbey has timed tickets and the town shuts down early, so plan accordingly.

Women travellers

Very safe small Austrian town.

Culture & etiquette

Comfortable walking shoes essential for cobblestone Abbey grounds. Modest dress required inside the Abbey church — cover shoulders and knees.
  • + Greet locals with a smile and a polite greeting in the local language
  • + Remove shoes when entering homes if you see others doing so
  • + Respect local customs and religious practices
  • + Ask permission before photographing people, especially in rural areas
  • - Do not engage in excessive public displays of affection
  • - Do not arrive without pre-booked Abbey tickets in July and August
  • - Do not arrive after 5pm — most attractions including the Abbey close by 5:30pm
  • - Do not expect a lively evening scene — Melk is a day-trip town

Food to try

Wiener Schnitzel

Pounded veal (or pork) escalope, breaded in fine breadcrumbs and pan-fried in clarified butter until golden — served with lemon and potato salad.

Apfelstrudel

Thin pastry rolled around spiced apple and raisin filling, dusted with icing sugar and served warm with vanilla sauce or whipped cream.

Gulasch

Hearty Hungarian-influenced beef stew with paprika, onions and caraway — a staple of Viennese coffee house menus since the 19th century.
