Marseille travel guide

Marseille is France's oldest city and largest Mediterranean port, a multicultural melting pot with raw energy and stunning coastal beauty. The Vieux-Port (Old Port), Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, and the dramatic Calanques coastline define this authentic, non-touristy French city. Gateway to Provence and the Côte d'Azur.

Marseille is France's most misunderstood city. The Vieux-Port (Old Port), Le Panier, and Cours Julien are safe, vibrant, and wonderful. Be aware in the Noailles market area (popular but dense crowds = pickpocket zone). Northern housing estates (Cité des Lauriers, Cité Face) are not tourist areas and should be avoided. The Corniche coastal road, MUCEM museum, and Estaque are all safe. Take the Métro rather than walking isolated back streets at night. Emergency: 15, 17, 18.
