Kotor travel guide

Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage fortified town nestled dramatically at the end of Europe's southernmost fjord. Its perfectly preserved medieval walls climb impossibly steep mountains, its maze of cobblestone streets hide ancient churches and Venetian palaces, and its bay (Boka Kotorska) is one of the most stunning natural harbors in the world. Often compared to Dubrovnik but more intimate and affordable.

Safety

Very Safe

Kotor is a very safe destination. Montenegro has low levels of crime and Kotor's Old Town is compact and well-monitored. The main considerations are practical: boats during bora winds can be rough, and mountain roads are narrow and require careful driving. No significant tourist-targeted criminal activity.

Women travellers

Very safe small Old Town. Cruise ships bring crowds during day. Bay of Kotor is peaceful.

Culture & etiquette

Smart casual is appropriate for most settings. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites — cover shoulders and knees.
  • + Pet the cats - they're beloved
  • + Climb to the fortress for sunset
  • + Visit Perast by boat
  • + Respect church dress codes
  • - Don't visit only when cruise ships are in
  • - Don't skip the fortress climb
  • - Don't forget water for the climb
  • - Don't swim in the main harbor
