Safety
safeKandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital and is very safe for tourists. Main risks are the chaotic traffic in the town centre (Kandy has some of Sri Lanka's worst traffic), slippery paths at the Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary when it rains, and overcharging at tuk-tuks. The Knuckles Mountain Range hikes require guides due to remoteness.
Women travellers
Kandy is generally safe for solo women — it is a major pilgrimage and cultural centre. The area around the Temple of the Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake is very well-patrolled. The Kandy Clock Tower area and the town centre can be quite crowded during Esala Perahera festival (July/Aug) — extra vigilance for pickpockets during the procession.
