Engelberg travel guide
Engelberg is a classic Alpine resort village at 1,000m beneath Mount Titlis (3,238m) — home to the world's first revolving cable car (Rotair) reaching the glacier summit, a working Benedictine monastery founded in 1120, and year-round mountain activities from ski to summer hiking on Europe's most accessible glacier.

Safety
9Engelberg is extremely safe. Mountain activities carry weather-dependent risks — check forecasts at www.slf.ch for avalanche conditions in winter. Summit altitude (3,020m) can cause mild altitude discomfort.
Women travellers
Completely safe alpine village.
Culture & etiquette
- + Visit the Benedictine Monastery (still active with monks) — guided tours available; monastery shop sells superb cheese, honey and beer
- + Book Titlis in good weather — cloud can close it; early morning is clearest
- + Ski and mountain biking — Engelberg's descent routes are among Switzerland's finest
- - Don't underestimate summit cold — even in July, Mount Titlis is -3°C at the top
- - Don't skip the ice cave at the glacier — an extraordinary 10-minute walk through the living glacier body
- - Don't book Titlis on a cloudy day — no view, and the experience is halved
Food to try
Engelberg monastery cheese (Klosterkäse)
The Benedictine monastery has produced cheese in the valley since the 12th century — today their alpine Klosterkäse is a semi-hard cheese with a mild, buttery flavour and slight sweetness from summer pasture milk; sold at the monastery shop at the gate; the closest you can get to medieval Swiss food tradition
Cheese fondue at altitude (Bergfondüe)
Fondue at 2,000m in a mountain hut — often a blend of local Engelberg cheese and Gruyère; the altitude, cold air and physical effort of hiking up to reach the hut makes it taste entirely different from fondue in the valley; Brunni and Jochpass huts both serve excellent versions
Alpine herb soup (Kräutersuppe)
The traditional mountain hut starter — a clear broth infused with dried alpine herbs (arnica, gentian blossoms, meadow clover); warming, aromatic and connected to the avalanche of alpine herbs that grow on Engelberg's summer pastures
