Safety
safeEdinburgh is one of Scotland's safest cities. Crime rates are low by UK standards. Main tourist areas (Royal Mile, New Town, Princes Street) are very safe day and night. Pickpocketing can occur in crowded Festival crowds (August) — use inside pockets or money belts in August. Cowgate and some late-night club areas on weekends have drunk crowds but rarely violence toward tourists. The closes (narrow alleys off the Royal Mile) are safe but can be slippery in wet weather — watch your footing. Emergency: 999.
Women travellers
Very safe for solo women. The Royal Mile, New Town, Stockbridge, and Leith waterfront are well-lit and safe at all hours. During August (Fringe Festival) streets are extremely busy — join the crowds confidently. Use official taxis at night rather than unmarked vehicles.
Culture & etiquette
- + Try haggis
- + Visit on Hogmanay (New Year)
- + Appreciate bagpipes
- + Learn some history
- - Do not call Edinburgh "Edinboro" — locals find it mildly irritating. The correct pronunciation is "ED-in-buh-ruh"
- - Avoid stepping on the Heart of Midlothian cobblestone mosaic on the Royal Mile (locals traditionally spit on it — a historical tradition, but do not copy them)
