Crete travel guide

Crete is the birthplace of Minoan civilization — Europe's oldest — and home to the legendary Minotaur's palace at Knossos. Greece's largest and most diverse island offers everything: mountain gorges, pristine beaches, authentic villages, exceptional Cretan cuisine, and a fierce local identity. From sophisticated Chania to the wild south coast, Crete rewards slow travelers.

Safety

Very Safe

Crete is safe and has very low crime for tourists. Heraklion (largest city), Chania (most beautiful), Rethymno (arts and food capital), and the Samaria Gorge are all safe. Road driving in Crete requires care — narrow mountain roads in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the Lasithi Plateau have limited guardrails and blind bends. The Samaria Gorge hike (16km) requires proper footwear — the rocky descent is dangerous in flip-flops. Emergency: 100, 112.

Women travellers

Exercise standard precautions. Research specific areas before visiting. Use registered transport services. Avoid isolated areas at night.

Culture & etiquette

Smart casual is appropriate for most settings. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites — cover shoulders and knees.
