Safety
Very SafeCrete is safe and has very low crime for tourists. Heraklion (largest city), Chania (most beautiful), Rethymno (arts and food capital), and the Samaria Gorge are all safe. Road driving in Crete requires care — narrow mountain roads in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the Lasithi Plateau have limited guardrails and blind bends. The Samaria Gorge hike (16km) requires proper footwear — the rocky descent is dangerous in flip-flops. Emergency: 100, 112.
