Safety
Low RiskCoimbatore is a safe industrial city. Petty theft can occur at the busy bus/train stations — keep bags close. Use metered Ola/Uber rather than negotiating with street autos. The city is safe for solo women travellers during the day; use rideshares after dark.
Women travellers
Coimbatore is a large industrial and commercial city with a relatively safe atmosphere for women. RS Puram, Gandhipuram, and Avinashi Road areas are well-developed and safe. Avoid isolated areas near Singanallur lake after dark. Ola/Uber widely available. The city is conservative — dress modestly near temples.

Food to try
South Indian breakfast
The morning meal culture of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala—idli, vada, dosa, pongal and upma with sambar and multiple chutneys; served from 7am to noon in Darshini or standalone breakfast stalls; the correct fermentation batter age and sambar freshness separates good from great
Kongunadu cuisine
Coimbatore and Erode's distinct Tamil regional cooking—mutton kola urundai (fried mutton balls), kaadai (quail) fry, Kongu biryani and paruthi paal (cotton seed milk); less known than Chettinad but considered by food scholars equally complex and ancient
Biryani
India's most contested rice dish—every region claims superiority; Hyderabadi dum biryani, Lucknowi Awadhi biryani, Kolkata biryani with potato and egg, Malabar biryani with khyma rice; the dum method sealing rice and meat together is universal; the spice calibration varies wildly
Filter coffee
South India's great ritual—100% arabica coffee beans slow-dripped into thick decoction, combined with hot milk in a brass tumbler and davara; poured from height to cool the temperature and create a froth; the MTR or Darshini chain version sets the standard
Annapoorna meals
South Indian wholesome vegetarian meals—rice, sambar, rasam, kootu, poriyal, papad, pickle, curd and payasam; the Annapoorna style restaurant originated in Tamil Nadu and spread across South India; unlimited refills, unchanged menu and fixed price since 1948
