Cinque Terre travel guide
Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a UNESCO World Heritage string of five ancient fishing villages along the rugged Ligurian coast — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Connected by hiking trails through vineyards and olive groves, these car-free villages of pastel houses stack impossibly on cliffs above crystal waters. Raw Italian beauty.

Safety
Very SafeCinque Terre villages are very safe. The main dangers are the hiking trails: the famous Via dell'Amore (Lovers' Lane) involves cliff-edge walking — use the railing at all times. Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) paths become very slippery when wet. Wear hiking boots — not flip-flops or sandals. Trains between the five villages run frequently but platforms are very narrow — stay behind the yellow line. Sunset crowds at Riomaggiore and Vernazza fill the tiny squares quickly. Emergency: 118, 112.
Women travellers
