Chișinău is moderately safe. Petty theft is the main concern, particularly around the Central Market and public transport. Avoid unlicensed taxis — use Yandex Go or Bolt apps. Tap water is not potable — drink bottled water.

Women travellers

Generally safe. Standard precautions on public transport at night. Night buses and taxis should be pre-booked via app.

Culture & etiquette

Smart casual is acceptable for most situations. Dress conservatively for Orthodox churches and monasteries — women should cover hair with a scarf and wear skirts below the knee or trousers. Winter (Nov–Mar) is cold — temperatures regularly fall below -10°C.
