Safety

safe

Bordeaux city centre is very safe — a UNESCO World Heritage city that is compact and walkable. Main risk is pickpockets at the Marché des Capucins (Sunday market) and around the tram stops at Quinconces and Victoire. Avoid La Benauge (Bastide district, east of the Garonne) after dark. The wine country around Saint-Émilion is entirely safe. Emergency: 15 (SAMU/medical), 17 (police), 18 (fire).

Women travellers

Bordeaux is safe for solo women. Saint-Pierre, Saint-Michel, and the Grand Théâtre areas are well-lit and busy. Avoid rue Sainte-Catherine late at night and the La Benauge district. The tram system runs until 1am and is reliable and safe.
