Safety
safeBirmingham city centre has improved greatly over the past decade. The Bullring, Grand Central, Brindleyplace, and Jewellery Quarter are safe for tourists day and night. The city is very multicultural — visitors of all backgrounds are welcome. Avoid Small Heath, Handsworth, Lozells, and Sparkbrook (outer residential areas) — no tourist reason to visit. Pickpockets operate in the Bullring and Selfridges on busy weekends. New Street Station is busy and safe but watch your bags. After large events at Utilita Arena and Villa Park, streets outside get very crowded and valuables can be at risk. Emergency: 999.
Women travellers
Birmingham city centre is safe for solo women. Bullring, Grand Central, Brindleyplace, and the Jewellery Quarter are all safe day and night. The city is très multicultural and welcoming. Avoid Handsworth and Lozells outer areas at night.
