9Bern is extraordinarily safe. The main practical concern is the cost of living — budget accordingly. Parking is limited and expensive — arrive by train.

Bernerplatte
Bern's definitive feast-dish — a vast wooden board of sauerkraut and boiled potatoes piled high with smoked and salted meats: Speck (smoked bacon), cured beef tongue, smoked pork chop, pork rinds and Bernerwurst sausages; a traditional farmer's meal from the surrounding Bernese countryside; order 24hrs ahead at traditional restaurants — it takes a full day to prepare
Rösti
The Swiss-German equivalent of hash brown — grated potato, formed in a disc, fried in butter until outsides are golden and crispy; the Bernese style is particularly thick and buttery; the German-French language border (Röstigraben — 'Rösti ditch') jokes aside, Bernese Rösti is one of Switzerland's great simple dishes
Toblerone (from Bern)
The Swiss mountain chocolate triangular bar was invented in Bern in 1908 by Theodor Tobler — the mountain shape represents the Matterhorn; in Bern's confectionery shops you can buy freshly-made Toblerone ingredients and hand-assembled bars; the original Swiss chocolate institution
Cheese fondue
In Bern as throughout western Switzerland — a mix of Gruyère and Emmental (rather than Emmental and Vacherin Fribourgeois as in Lausanne) melted in a caquelon with white wine and a splash of kirsch; eat at a traditional Swiss restaurant in the old city on a cold evening
