Bandipur travel guide

Bandipur National Park is South India's premier tiger reserve — a core zone of Project Tiger on the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border, contiguous with Nagarhole, Mudumalai, and the Nilgiris. The open scrub-forest terrain makes for excellent wildlife visibility; it holds one of the highest tiger densities in India.

Safety

Bandipur is genuinely wild. The Mysore-Ooty highway passes through the park and is closed at night (9pm-6am) to prevent wildlife kills. Never drive this road after dark.

Women travellers

Very safe within resort and safari zone. All safaris with official guides.

Culture & etiquette

Muted forest colours. No perfume or strong scent on safari.
  • + Stay silent during safari and switch off phones
  • + Use a naturalist — resorts with trained naturalists provide transformative safari experiences
  • + Visit Gopalaswamy Hills at dawn for spectacular valley views over Bandipur
  • - Don't drive the Mysore-Ooty highway through the park at night — it is legally closed and extremely dangerous for wildlife
  • - Don't expect guaranteed tiger sightings — Bandipur has excellent rates but wildlife is not performance
  • - Don't litter in or near the forest buffer zones

Food to try

Coorg Pandi Curry

The signature meat dish of the Kodagu (Coorg) tribal community — pork slow-cooked with Kachampuli vinegar (a Garcinia gummigutta concentrate unique to Coorg), whole black pepper, cardamom and coconut; deeply aromatic, tangy, and unlike anything else in Indian cuisine; served with kaada (thick boiled rice) at Coorg community restaurants near Bandipur

Ragi Mudde

Karnataka's nutritional staple — dense balls of finger millet flour cooked to a dough consistency; eaten by pressing and dipping into spiced gravies; the millet has a distinctly earthy flavour and sustains energy for long forest walks; traditional working-class food of the region's farming communities now respected as a health food

Filter coffee at dawn

The ritual before every Bandipur safari — South Indian filter coffee brewed overnight in steel percolators with 80% coffee and 20% chicory; frothed in a steel tumbler; drunk before 6am when temperatures are still cool and the forest is awakening; one of India's most atmospheric pre-activity rituals
