Safety

Very Safe

Amalfi town itself is very safe. The main danger on the Amalfi Coast is the SS163 (Amalfi Drive) — a famously narrow cliff-hugging road with buses, scooters and tourists sharing hairpin bends. Never drive it for the first time in a hire car without prior driving experience on mountain roads. Take the SITA bus instead. Hiking trails (Path of the Gods, Valle delle Ferriere) require sturdy footwear — paths are steep and slippery. Emergency: 118 (medical), 113 (police), 1530 (coast guard).

Women travellers

Generally safe. Some catcalling may occur but rarely dangerous. Travel in groups at night. Watch for pickpockets.

Culture & etiquette

Smart casual is appropriate for most settings. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites — cover shoulders and knees.
  • + Take the SITA bus rather than driving
  • + Visit multiple towns, not just Positano
  • + Try local limoncello
  • + Book restaurants and hotels in advance
  • - Don't drive if you're not experienced - it's terrifying
  • - Don't visit only in August - crowds are extreme
  • - Don't skip Ravello
  • - Don't underestimate walking times - it's all stairs
