Safety
9Abisko is safe from crime but demands respect for nature. Arctic conditions can be life-threatening — in winter, never leave marked paths without a guide. In summer, mosquitoes are the primary inconvenience (real discomfort, not danger).

Culture & etiquette
- + Respect Sami indigenous culture — the region is traditional Sami reindeer herding land
- + Follow Allemansrätten (right to roam) rules — you may walk anywhere but must not damage nature
- + Book Aurora Sky Station experiences well in advance in peak northern lights season (Sept-March)
- - Don't approach reindeer — they are managed livestock belonging to Sami herders
- - Don't leave trails in winter without proper arctic clothing and navigation equipment
- - Don't underestimate the cold — summer visitors are sometimes not prepared for how quickly weather changes above the Arctic Circle
Food to try
Sami reindeer stew (Renstek)
Slow-braised reindeer meat with root vegetables and lingonberries — the definitive Sami meal; reindeer is lean, flavourful and sustainably herded by Sami families who have managed the animals on Lapland pastures for thousands of years; served at Abisko tourist station restaurant
Cloudberry (Hjortron) jam
The Arctic's golden berry — cloudberries grow only in northern bogs and are impossible to cultivate at scale; bright amber, tart-sweet and intensely flavoured; made into jam and served on fresh waffles at Abisko's mountain cabin cafes; available in shops in season (August)
Arctic char (Röding)
Sweden's most prized freshwater fish — related to salmon, caught in the crystal clear Lake Torneträsk adjacent to Abisko; pan-fried with butter and dill; the local alternative to salmon and arguably superior in freshness
