Kerala houseboats are a staple in every Indian travel agent's portfolio. The problem isn't finding availability - it's pricing correctly. Boat categories, routes, seasons, and inclusions vary wildly, and clients often compare your quote against random OTA listings without understanding the differences.

Alleppey (Alappuzha) - most popular
The classic backwater route. Most operators are based here.
- Short cruise (lunch to next day lunch - 22 hours): Standard duration
- Overnight cruise (check-in 12 PM, check-out 9 AM): Budget option
- 2-night cruise: Covers more backwater territory
Kumarakom
More scenic and less crowded than Alleppey. Vembanad Lake backdrop.
- Slightly higher rates than Alleppey for equivalent category
- Fewer operator options, but generally better maintained boats
Kollam–Alleppey
The longest backwater stretch (8 hours one-way by public ferry). Available as a one-way houseboat cruise (premium, less common).

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all houseboats are the same - a ₹6,000 boat and ₹25,000 boat are completely different experiences
- Not clarifying AC timing - some "AC houseboats" only run AC from 9 PM to 6 AM
- Forgetting peak supplements - Christmas/New Year can add 50% to standard rates
- Ignoring road transfer time - Kochi to Alleppey is 1.5 hours, Munnar to Alleppey is 4+ hours; factor this into the itinerary
- Not mentioning the 12 PM to 9 AM timing - clients expect full 24-hour usage but standard checkout is 9 AM next day
Client expectations to manage
- "I want to cruise all day" - houseboats anchor by evening (government rule). Daytime cruising, anchored at night.
- "Can we swim?" - backwaters are not suitable for swimming. If clients want swimming, add a beach stay.
- "Is it clean?" - varies enormously by operator. Always use operators you've personally verified or who come recommended.
- "WiFi?" - most houseboats have no WiFi, and mobile signal is patchy. Sell this as a feature ("digital detox").
